밴조, banjo
이 악기는 미국의 컨츄리음악을 연주하는데 없어서는 안되는 악기이다. 보통 연주되는 것은 기타 처럼 큰 종류이나, 그 보다 고음음역을 연주하는 엘토 벤조가 있으며, 이 악기는 그 위의 음역을 연주한다. 이 악기 역시 만돌린의 특성인 복4현(8줄)과 타악기와 몸통은 벤조의 형태를 하고 있으므로, 두 종류 악기의 특성을 함께 지닌 복합 악기의 일종이다.
보통 벤조는 앞부분이 특수 플라스틱으로 되어 있으나 이 악기는 뱀가죽으로 되어 있는 것이 매우 특이하며, 100여년 전 미국에서 만들어진 골동품 악기로 추정되는 희귀종이다.
벤조는 앞부분을 타악기 처럼 특수 플라스틱이나 동물 가죽이 사용되며, 그 위에 브릿지가 놓이고 그 위에 스틸선으로 되어 있으므로 날카로우며, 크고도 강력한 음색의 특성을 지니고 있다. 벤조는 연주시 오른 손가락에 핑거링(피크일종)을 끼고 연주하며, 컨츄리 음악을 노래 할 때 경쾌한 컨츄리 특유의 리듬을 살리는데 유용하게 사용된다.
